With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, the hopeless romantics of the Kirkwall BID are planning to mark the occasion with a very special gesture they hope will win over the hearts of shoppers.

The BID’s ‘Keeping the Heart in Kirkwall’ promotion aims to woo Orcadians into the capital by getting them onto the scent of something befitting the season of love.

Ten special BID Valentine’s heart tokens will be placed throughout Kirkwall’s town centre on Saturday 13 February, with those lucky enough to find one able to exchange it for a BID Valentine’s bouquet of flowers.

The event is being sponsored by Kirkwall based florists Florabunda and the Wellpark Garden Centre, with each providing five bouquets of flowers.

“Mystery is all part of the Valentine’s Day tradition, from unsigned cards to surprise bouquets of flowers, so we wanted to do something that would really captivate our shoppers and help boost local business in the process,” said Kirkwall BID manager, Carly Tait. “As with all the best Valentine’s surprises, our heart token search will require a little bit of effort, but it promises to be lots of fun on the day.

“Last year saw Orkney voted the most romantic destination in the UK, so we thought we would help maintain that reputation.” She added: “We think St Valentine would have loved shopping in Kirkwall and been impressed by the number of independent businesses we’ve got in town. We’re also sure he’d have been delighted to hear about Orkney’s special romantic status and the fact Kirkwall’s traders are planning something fun in his honour.”

Sarah Glue, from the Wellpark Garden Centre, said she was delighted to be playing cupid by helping support the event.

“Love is very much in the air right now at the Wellpark Garden Centre as we prepare for one of our busiest times of the year,” she said. “We’ll happily arrange a beautiful bouquet to be delivered to your partner, or indeed your secret love.”

Julia Sherratt from Florabunda, added: “Valentine’s is the perfect time to show the one you love how much you care and we’re thrilled to be able to help five lucky winners to do just that. We’ll make sure your bouquet is as special as the loved one you give it to.”

If you are lucky enough to find one of the 10 Kirkwall BID heart tokens on Saturday 13 February, please follow the instructions on the token and exchange it for your Valentine’s bouquet, which will be waiting for you at our participating florists.
