Orkney Crafts Association’s new website goes live today (10 June), showcasing the work of around 40 local crafts businesses, covering everything from jewellery and silversmithing, to textiles, knitwear, art, photography, woodwork and pottery.Orkney crafts assoc member LOGO

Each crafts person has a dedicated page, offering insights into their background, inspiration and techniques, along with high quality photographs of their work. The site, which has been optimised for tablet and mobile use, also contains an interactive map of the Orkney Craft Trail and a blog on OCA activities.

The new site – www.orkneydesignercrafts.com has been created by Shetland based NB Communication, which produced the recently relaunched Orkney.com portal and the Orkney Food and Drink website.

Founded in 1991, OCA is a member run body that supports and promotes professional crafts people working in the islands.

Hilary Grant of OCA, said: “Whilst OCA has had a website for a number of years, we’ve been very keen to redevelop and refresh it to properly reflect what’s happening within the incredibly diverse and dynamic Orkney crafts sector. We’ll be adding exciting content to the new site on a regular basis, keeping visitors updated and engaged with news and a fascinating behind the scenes perspective into the creative practices of OCA members. We want to show the world what is unique and special about the craftwork produced here.”

She added: “We’re also asking local people and visitors to support us and spread the word about the new site with friends and family by sharing photos of their own experiences of Orkney crafts. If you can Tweet about us, or share photos on Facebook or Instagram using the hashtag #orkneycraft, you’ll be helping spread the reach of our small but vibrant creative community.”

Edgar Balfour, development manager for Orkney food, drink and crafts, said: “The standard of work produced by OCA members is exceptionally high, so it’s appropriate that we have a professionally produced website that mirrors the attention to detail our crafts people are renowned for the world over. Ultimately, we hope to be able to sell crafts products on the new site, but in the meantime it will undoubtedly help drive more custom to member businesses and hopefully encourage many more visitors onto the crafts trail too.”
