Two Orkney firms have scooped top awards for their products at a major food and drink trade show being held in Glasgow this weekend.

The Orkney Bakery (Argo’s) won a Best Confectionery, Biscuit and Snack Award for its Orkney Beremeal Shortbread at the Scotland’s Speciality Food Show 2015, with the Island Smokery receiving a Highly Commended accolade in the Chilled and Frozen category for its Orkney Butter.

Scotland’s Speciality Food Show brings together 140 exhibitors offering the very best of fine food products from Scotland, the UK and overseas. The show, which regularly attracts over 1000 trade buyers from delicatessens, farm shops, speciality food retailers, food halls and hotels, is running between 18 and 20 January.

In addition to the Island Smokery and The Orkney Bakery, this year’s show is being attended by Jolly’s of Orkney, The Orkney Creamery and Barony Mills. Tourism representatives from the county are also taking part in the event, which features a special Orkney aisle showcasing products from the islands.

Edgar Balfour, development manager for Orkney food, drink and crafts, said: “It’s hugely exciting to see two Orkney firms secure top product awards on the very first day of this extremely important national trade show. Everyone who is down here representing Orkney is absolutely delighted for them and it’s given us all a real boost as we prepare for the next two days of this busy event. The Speciality Food Show is running concurrently with the Scotland’s Trade Fair event, being attended by Ortak, Sheila Fleet Jewellery, Alison Moore Designs, Celina Rupp Jewellery & Artwork, The Harray Potter, Aurora Jewellery, Hume Sweet Hume and Castaway Crafts, with backing from Highlands and Islands Enterprise and Orkney Islands Council’s joint Orkney Marketing Scheme.
